Stress & Anxiety

Feeling stressed? We can all face stress from time to time. However, long-term stressors can have a major influence upon mood, our sense of well-being, behavior, health and overall quality of life. Acute stress responses may be adaptive and typically may not seem to impose a health burden, but if left ignored for too long - anxiety and burnout is often what comes as a result.

Anxiety is characterized as an abnormal and overwhelming sense of apprehension and fear often marked by physical signs (such as tension, sweating, and increased pulse rate), by doubt concerning the reality and nature of the threat, and by self-doubt of one's capacity to cope with it. Similarly burnout, is an ongoing psychological syndrome characterized by emotional exhaustion, feelings of cynicism and reduced personal accomplishment that is usually brought on by ongoing anxiety or stress.

Keeping in balance with life’s fast pace by taking the time to slow down and practice stress reducing activities is hugely important. These may include, but are not limited to;

  • Schedule regular physical activity
  • Follow a healthy diet
  • Minimize phone use and screen time
  • Reduce caffeine intake
  • Spend time with friends and family
  • Spend time in nature
  • Practice deep breathing
  • Consider supplements as an extra support

If you do consider supplements, Adaptogens should be top of the list! Adaptogens are plants and mushrooms that help our body respond to stress, anxiety, fatigue and overall well-being. Adaptogens can be taken by adding them to food or beverages or taken as tinctures or capsules. Adaptogens bring your body back to a steady balance by managing both physical and mental stressors. Adaptogens increase the state of nonspecific resistance in stress and decrease sensitivity to stressors, which results in stress protection, and prolong the phase of resistance (stimulatory effect).

Some of the key, most effective adaptogens when it comes to stress relief, include Ashwagandha, Rhodiola and Siberian Ginseng, all of which are some of the key ingredients in our Adrenal Elixir.

Ashwagandha is thought to decrease levels of cortisol (the "stress hormone"), therefore soothing the stress response of the body. It may work by regulating the activity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, or the series of interactions between the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, adrenal gland that controls our stress response, according to a 2019 article in the journal Medicine

Rhodiola is a powerful adaptogen that helps shift our mentality and physical embodiment away from a race and toward a long solo run for vitality and pure enjoyment. Rhodiola increases the special neurotransmitter largely connected with our mood: serotonin (Yance, 2013; Brown, et al., 2002).

Siberian Ginseng has traditionally been used as an adaptogen, a compound that increases one's ability to adapt to environmental factors, including physical and emotional stress. Studies have investigated the effect of Siberian ginseng on increasing energy, reducing fatigue, and on enhancing exercise performance.

Greal’s Adrenal Elixir works to naturally relieve symptoms of stress and mild anxiety, while the powerful, high quality ingredients we’ve sourced simultaneously support your energy levels and improve your cognitive performance.
